Drama

“We want every child to experience the joy of performance and the unforgettable thrill of thunderous applause.”

Our dynamic and diverse drama curriculum is designed to capture imaginations, overcome inhibitions and encourage self-expression. We give our children the freedom and self-confidence to work collaboratively, think creatively, and surprise and delight each other – while thoroughly enjoying every second of their time with us.

We teach an exciting range of performance and dramatisation techniques, from the joy of movement to music for the youngest children, through to characterisation and production and direction for the older children. We pride ourselves in the extraordinary range of our drama, from Shakespeare and Rogers and Hammerstein to our infamous Schools Got Talent show, where anything can – and frequently does – happen.

To help our children flourish we work closely with colleagues in the English, Languages and Music departments. The whole school is involved in Tribe Poetry, children in Years 5, 6 and 7 take part in English Speaking Board assessments and Year 6 children perform at the Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition to nurture extraordinary confidence in the process.

For children in Year 7 and 8 who want to experience the thrill of working on a really professional production, we stage a senior play/musical with amazing production values and formal auditions. Year 8 then bring together everything they’ve learned to write, produce and perform a stunning final year revue – with inspiring and often hilarious results.

We are delighted to say that this year alone Dulwich Prep children have won a truly magnificent 12 drama scholarships to senior schools. Well done one and all.
